Artist's narrative: Guard Island Light is so named because it guards the junction of Clarence Strait, Behm Canal, and the Tongass Narrows. All three waterways have been heavily trafficked shipping lanes since the turn of the century. "Breaking" captures that point we await in our frequent Southeast strorms when the storm breaks and the sky lightens.
Ketchikan artist Dick Miller captures the marine landscape of Southeast Alaska through his watercolors of boats at rest and at work in all kinds of weather - bright sun, soft fog, and sometimes turbulent seas. His watercolors reflect his close acquaintance with the area around Ketchikan - the mountains, the beaches, the flora, and the waters.
